Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 NPP flagbearer and former vice president, has denounced as divisive and unfounded propaganda any allegations that his wife, Samira Bawumia, is not a Ghanaian.
Speaking at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 33rd anniversary celebration in New York on Sunday, August 24, Dr. Bawumia claimed the accusations were hazardous and implausible. The charges were allegedly made by a senior party figure who was associated with one of his internal rivals.
He maintained that such insults were especially unwarranted because of Samira Bawumia’s active political involvement.
“When Samira was campaigning across the country for the party, nobody said she was not a true Ghanaian. So, what has changed now?” he questioned.
Dr. Bawumia insisted that questioning his wife’s nationality damages the NPP’s wider appeal while applauding her efforts to rally support for the party in both the opposition and the government.
“It shows how desperate some of our opponents have become. NPP is not a tribally or religiously bigoted party, so look for other issues to market yourselves,” he said.
The former vice president urged party members to respect the NPP’s inclusive heritage and resist divisive rhetoric.
“We are the party of unity and hope. Our strength comes from embracing Ghanaians of every background, and that is what will make us win in 2028,” he stated.
