Joyce Bawa Mogtari, a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has questioned the President’s assertion that 600,000 Ghanaians are self-employed because to the Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED).
She asserts that the president’s assertion is untrue and contradictory.
She provided a video clip of Dr. John Ofori-Tenkorang, the Director-General of SSNIT, lamenting the low participation in the Self-Employed Enrollment Drive (SEED).
He stated that just 630 of the 245,000 seniors who received monthly income from SSNIT were self-employed.
According to him, the program’s goal is to increase the number of independent contractors who will retire and get their plan contributions within the next ten years.
“Mr. Speaker, in speaking about the work space and jobs, our thoughts invariably turn to young people and for some people, to the formal sector and formal sector jobs,” the President remarked during the State of the Nation Address.
We frequently overlook the fact that only a small portion of the working population is employed in the formal sector. Unfortunately, the majority of workers in the nation do not have pensions, making up a small but significant portion of the working population that is covered by pension systems.
To that extent, in May last year, SSNIT launched the Self-Employed Enrolment Drive (SEED), an initiative which seeks to improve coverage and increase the contributor base of the SSNIT Scheme. Since the launch of the SEED initiative, some six hundred thousand (600,000) self- employed persons have been enrolled onto the programme, and now have some form of social security cover”.
