Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the former vice president, is anticipated to formally submit his nomination tomorrow, Thursday, August 28, 2025, as the campaign for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential ticket has heated up.
His submission would come after that of Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, the party’s former general secretary, who was the first candidate to turn in his candidacy paperwork on Tuesday.
As the NPP gets ready to select its next flagbearer for the general elections in 2028, the candidates are igniting what looks to be a very competitive race by moving their aspirations from announcements to the official nomination stage.
Yesterday, Tuesday, August 26, Mr. Agyepong, who was the General Secretary from 2014 to 2015, delivered his nomination papers to the Presidential Elections Committee at the Accra party headquarters.
Supporters have characterized his determination to be the first to file as an indication of his willingness to guide the party into the future.
At the time of the filing, the NPP is expanding its voter registration and implementing other major changes to its election procedures.
In what is anticipated to be one of the most important internal elections in the party’s recent history, the Presidential Elections Committee has released an update that aims to increase participation and guarantee inclusivity.
The NPP clarified that additional categories of delegates, known as the “album,” have been added to the voter register in a statement signed by Mr. William Yamoah, Secretary of the Presidential Elections Committee.
Members of the Council of Elders and Patrons, former members of Parliament, former regional and constituency executives, former ministers, metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives (MMDCEs), TESCON leaders, and current and former external branch executives are among them.
The deadline for registering these extra delegates is Friday, September 19, 2025, and it started this week. To help members in the diaspora access the process, the party has also launched an online site.
Only those who fulfill the requirements and finish the registration process will be able to cast a ballot in the presidential primary, which is set for Saturday, January 31, 2026, the party said.
To protect the election’s integrity, the Presidential Elections Committee has promised its members that it will thoroughly verify and validate the voter list.
The NPP has emphasized that its dedication to equity, inclusivity, and openness in internal democratic procedures is reflected in the register’s expansion.
“The update to the delegate album is part of efforts to ensure that all stakeholders who have contributed to the growth of the party have a voice in determining its future leadership,” the statement read.
Now that Mr. Agyepong is leading the way and Dr. Bawumia is scheduled to submit his nomination tomorrow, all eyes are on the other candidates who have just publicly stated their intentions thus far.
As the contenders go beyond rhetoric to formally declare their involvement in the contest, the filing of nominations marks the beginning of a more decisive phase.
