Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams disclosed the development when he appeared before Parliament’s Select Committee on Youth and Sports to brief lawmakers on Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Queiroz is returning to Ghana after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation reached an agreement to retain the Portuguese coach.

Members of his technical team are already in the country as preparations intensify for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifying matches.

The 73-year-old coach is expected to meet Minister Kofi Adams upon his arrival before his official unveiling. Details of his contract extension are also expected to be finalised following discussions between the coach, the ministry and the GFA.

One of Queiroz’s immediate responsibilities will be to announce the Black Stars squad for the opening two AFCON qualifying fixtures.

Queiroz guided Ghana to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America and will now focus on helping the Black Stars secure qualification for the 2027 continental tournament.

Ghana will open its 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign away against Côte d’Ivoire at the Stade de la Paix in Bouaké on September 24. The Black Stars will then return home to face The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium three days later.

The upcoming qualifiers are particularly important for Ghana after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Ghana had previously maintained a long-standing presence at the AFCON, featuring in every edition from 2008 to 2023, before missing the 2025 tournament.

With Carlos Queiroz set to resume full responsibility, attention will now turn to squad selection, preparations and Ghana’s bid to secure a place at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
