The Minister-designate for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mr. Samuel Nartey George, revealed a bold proposal Thursday to establish Ghana as Africa’s preeminent artificial intelligence (AI) powerhouse by 2028.

This vision, which aimed to use AI, big data, cybersecurity, and digital transformation to put Ghana at the vanguard of Africa’s digital revolution, was in line with the government’s larger technological and economic goals.

When Mr. George appeared before the Appointments Committee of Parliament for vetting, he emphasized how crucial it is for government organizations, businesses, and multinational IT companies to work together in order to accomplish this.

“Ghana should not just participate in the AI revolution but lead it. Mr Chairman, AI in 2025 is like Bitcoin in 2013,” he said, highlighting the transformative nature of artificial intelligence.

“Mr Chairman, President John Dramani Mahama has a clear vision on his AI policy, and we are going to take the current strategy that was developed by the previous government, review it, make it fit for purpose by engaging industry to ensure that Ghana becomes the hub for artificial intelligence on the African continent.”

According to Mr. George, his method would entail assessing the current AI approach to make sure it was still applicable, strong, and flexible in light of the rapidly changing technological environment.

“I plan to execute innovation hubs, introduce AI on top of big data, and make Ghana the hub for AI, machine learning, cybersecurity, data analytics, and data processing on the African continent,” he stated.

Eight key pillars for an inclusive and responsible ecosystem are outlined in Ghana’s National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2023–2033, which was created by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization.

These pillars include increasing access to AI education, preparing young people for AI-related careers, strengthening digital infrastructure and inclusivity, facilitating data access and governance, and encouraging the public sector to utilize AI.
