The French media giant Canal+ has finally acquired MultiChoice Group for $2 billion, solidifying its hold on Africa’s pay TV industry and establishing what it called a “global media and entertainment powerhouse.”
The acquisition unites operations that together serve over 40 million subscribers in around 70 countries, making Canal+ the largest shareholder of MultiChoice.
It’s Canal+’s biggest deal to date and a major step toward its goal of becoming a major force in the world of media.
Following regulatory approvals, MultiChoice, the parent company of DStv and GOtv, declared that the transaction is now complete. Customers were reassured by the business that current services will not be affected by the merger.
The two organizations made it clear in a joint statement that subscribers’ services would not be altered.
Will there be an impact on my DStv or GOtv service? No. “Services are operating normally,” the statement said. It further stated that customer service, billing channels, and local branch operations would not change, and that there would be no immediate changes to packages, price, or access.
The new company will be led by Canal+’s longtime CEO Maxime Saada, David Mignot, and Calvo Mawela, CEO of MultiChoice. According to Saada, the transaction was a turning point for both businesses.
He declared, “Together, we will bring you more of what you love — African stories, world-class entertainment, and exciting innovations for the future.”
With its headquarters located in France, Canal+ serves over 25 million customers globally and operates across Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Premium sports, original movies, documentaries, kid-friendly programming, and global collaborations—including its film production subsidiary, StudioCanal—are among the company’s well-known offerings.
The combination represents continuity rather than short-term upheaval for millions of homes throughout Africa.
Customers will still use their existing accounts, applications, and decoders, and Canal+ has made it clear that its priorities will be expanding its investment in African storytelling and enhancing its content offerings.
A significant turning point in the media landscape of Africa has been reached with MultiChoice’s merger with Canal+, which places the group at the forefront of both domestic and global entertainment.
