Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, has declared his desire to run for president of the NPP in the Parliamentary Majority caucus.

Sometime this month, the ruling party will begin accepting nominations for its presidential primary.

When the Vice President met with the Majority caucus on May 2, 2023, to solicit their support, it is said that he gave the clearest indication of his plan to succeed President Akufo-Addo.

Vice President Bawumia already has the support of more than 100 Members of Parliament (MPs).

He has also been widely predicted to win the NPP presidential primary for the general election in 2024.

The MPs think Dr. Bawumia can assist the governing party in achieving its goal of “breaking the 8.”

To choose a flagbearer for the 2024 general election, the NPP has scheduled November 4, 2023, as the date for its presidential primaries.

However, if more than five candidates submit applications to run in the primary elections, the party will hold a Special Congress on August 26 to reduce the field to five for the main primaries.

Alan Kyerematen, a former minister of trade and industry, and 10 other candidates have stated their desire to run in the presidential primary.

The other candidates include former General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, former Minister for Food and Agriculture Dr. Owusu Afriyie-Akoto, former Minister for Energy Boakye Agyarko, former Minister for Railway Development Joe Ghartey, and former MP for Mampong Francis Addai Nimoh.

The presidential primary nomination period, meanwhile, will start on May 26 and end on June 24, 2023.

Additionally, the party declared that parliamentary primaries would take place in February 2024.

Nominations for the party are welcome between December 20, 2023, and January 4, 2024.

The NPP will select its presidential candidate before selecting its parliamentary candidates, according to this.
