Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially submitted his nomination to run for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position in the general elections scheduled for 2028.

Dr. Bawumia was joined by his wife, Samira Bawumia, party officials, loyalists, and a sizable contingent of fans wearing NPP colors as he turned in his paperwork at the NPP headquarters in Accra on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

As his team proclaimed him the candidate most qualified to guide the party into the upcoming elections, the air was filled with chants and music.

In addition to thanking the NPP leadership and grassroots for their support, Dr. Bawumia promised to run a clean, issues-based campaign.

He emphasized his goal of creating a modern, inclusive Ghana based on industrialization, economic reform, digital innovation, and youth employment.

Senior party leaders and ministries have also indicated interest in the position, making Bawumia one of the front-runners in what is anticipated to be a fierce contest.

He will submit his nomination forms after Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, the party’s former general secretary, who was the first to do so.

As the NPP gets ready to select its next flagbearer for the general elections in 2028, the candidates are igniting what looks to be a very competitive race by moving their aspirations from announcements to the official nomination stage.

On Tuesday, August 26, 2025, Agyepong, who was General Secretary from 2014 to 2015, filed his nomination paperwork with the Presidential Elections Committee.

Supporters have characterized his choice to file first as an indication that he is prepared to guide the party into the future.

The NPP is expanding its voter registration and making other major changes to its election procedures at the time of the filing.

The Presidential Elections Committee released the update in an effort to increase participation and guarantee inclusivity in what is anticipated to be one of the most important internal elections in the party’s recent history.

Later this year, the NPP will elect a flagbearer to take over as the party’s leader ahead of the general elections in 2028, replacing outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
