The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has recovered GH¢4.3 million in lost revenue linked to illegal power connections and electricity theft in the Western Region between January and June 2026.
The recovery was achieved through a series of revenue protection exercises conducted across the Sekondi, Takoradi, Agona, Tarkwa and Sefwi Wiawso districts. The operations were aimed at detecting illegal electricity connections and reducing revenue losses suffered by the power distributor.
The General Manager of ECG in the Western Region, Ing. Emmanuel J. Ofori, said the company had intensified its crackdown on customers involved in electricity theft, with support from the Ghana Police Service.
According to him, ECG has established a dedicated police unit in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service to assist with investigations, arrests and enforcement actions involving illegal power connections.
Ing. Ofori warned customers engaged in electricity theft that ECG would pursue such cases and ensure that offenders faced the appropriate legal consequences.
He also urged members of the public to report suspected cases of illegal electricity connections, meter tampering and power theft to ECG, noting that public cooperation would help reduce commercial losses and protect the company’s revenue.
The Revenue Protection Manager at ECG, Ing. Eric Agyeman, disclosed that inspections uncovered several forms of electricity theft, including meter tampering, meter bypassing and unauthorised service connections.
He said ECG screened 2,367 customers across the affected districts during the revenue protection operations, resulting in the recovery of approximately 3.64 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity.
Ing. Agyeman explained that illegal connections deprive ECG of expected revenue while contributing significantly to the company’s commercial losses.
The latest ECG revenue recovery exercise highlights the power company’s continued efforts to combat electricity theft in Ghana, improve revenue collection and strengthen the country’s electricity distribution system.
