The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has replied to recent criticism from the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, stating that its ongoing investigations into claims against Dr. Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple are legal and within the scope of its mission.

EOCO stated in a news release dated April 9, 2026, that it had taken note of the chiefs’ public remarks regarding its treatment of the issue involving Dr. Kwamigah-Atokple, the owner of SESI-EDEM Company Ltd. and a member of the Council of State.

The Office revealed that it is presently dealing with three different petitions against the suspect and his business, all of which are allegedly related to gold fraud and appear to follow a similar pattern.

EOCO stated that it is carrying out its investigations in compliance with the law, rejecting allegations that it has behaved unlawfully. It also implied that efforts are being undertaken to hinder its operations.

The statement says that SESI-EDEM Company’s promoters seem to be behaving as if they are above the law while attempting to gain support in order to obstruct the inquiry process.

According to EOCO, the suspect has been offered the chance to address the accusations and help with investigations since November 2025, but he has not cooperated.

Rather, he was accused by the Office of using traditional, political, and media avenues to evade examination.

Dr. Kwamigah-Atokple is currently at large and is thought to be hiding in the Volta Region, according to the agency, which labelled him a fugitive from justice.

Its Surveillance and Asset Recovery Unit has been sent out to find and apprehend him, it further stated.

EOCO emphasised that no one is above the law and urged the public to provide information that can result in his arrest.

The statement follows criticism of EOCO’s actions by the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, which cited a recent High Court decision that determined the Office had handled the subject without a valid mandate.

If EOCO disagreed with the decision, the heads had asked it to respect the court’s authority and adhere to the proper legal procedures.

EOCO, however, insists that its efforts are still legal and that it would keep looking into the matter until the suspect is prosecuted.
