Ghana’s Attorney-General is working with authorities in the United States to pursue individuals allegedly implicated in a bribery and corruption scheme linked to a 2014–2017 power plant development contract between a Turkish energy company and the Government of Ghana.
Deputy Attorney-General Justice Srem Sai disclosed that the Attorney-General is collaborating with his US counterparts to ensure that persons connected to the alleged bribery scheme are brought to justice.
The development follows the conviction of Asante Kwaku Berko by a United States federal jury in Brooklyn, New York.
Berko was found guilty of conspiracy to violate the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), alongside other related offences.
The case centres on alleged corruption surrounding a power plant development agreement between the Government of Ghana and a Turkish energy company during the 2014–2017 period.
According to Justice Srem Sai, the Ghanaian government is engaging US law enforcement and justice authorities as part of efforts to identify and prosecute other individuals who may have been involved in the alleged bribery scheme.
The collaboration highlights Ghana’s efforts to strengthen international cooperation in the fight against corruption, bribery and financial crimes, particularly where alleged offences involve cross-border transactions and international companies.
The conviction of Asante Kwaku Berko in the United States is expected to intensify attention on the power plant contract and the individuals allegedly connected to the broader corruption case.
The Attorney-General’s Office has indicated that Ghana will continue working with relevant international authorities to ensure accountability for persons implicated in the alleged scheme.
