A strong security presence has been deployed at Laboma Beach in Accra as authorities prepare to begin a major demolition exercise aimed at tackling recurring flooding and restoring natural drainage systems in the capital.
The operation is being coordinated by the Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) as part of the government’s ongoing flood prevention measures, following the devastating June 29 floods that affected several communities across Accra.
Police and Military Secure Area Before Demolition Exercise
On Friday, police officers and military personnel were stationed around Laboma Beach to maintain law and order ahead of the demolition exercise. Access to parts of the beachfront was restricted while officials finalized preparations for the operation.
The increased security is intended to ensure a smooth and safe demolition process as authorities move to enforce planning and environmental regulations.
Unauthorized Structures to Be Removed
The planned demolition will focus on unauthorised structures built within the Laboma Beach enclave, particularly those obstructing waterways and natural drainage channels.
According to authorities, removing illegal developments is a key step in reducing the risk of flooding, especially during Ghana’s peak rainy season.
The exercise forms part of broader efforts that have already included drain desilting, clean-up campaigns, and earlier demolition operations carried out after the June floods.
Government Intensifies Flood Control Measures in Accra
Authorities have consistently identified illegal construction on waterways, wetlands, and other restricted areas as one of the leading causes of flooding in Accra.
The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has reiterated that enforcement exercises will continue in flood-prone communities to improve drainage, protect lives and property, and ensure compliance with Ghana’s environmental and physical planning laws.
Officials say the ongoing demolition exercise is part of a long-term strategy to strengthen flood management, enhance public safety, and minimize the impact of heavy rains across the Greater Accra Region.
