Ghana and Italy are exploring new opportunities to deepen defence cooperation, military security, and strategic partnership, following a high-level meeting between officials from both countries.
The Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Laura Ranalli, together with Italy’s Defence Attaché, Colonel Antonio Di Biaso, paid a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Minister for Defence, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, to discuss shared security priorities and identify new areas for bilateral cooperation.
The meeting focused on strengthening Ghana-Italy defence relations, enhancing security collaboration and developing practical initiatives to address emerging threats in the West African region.
Ghana Seeks Modern Defence Equipment and Military Technology
Minister Kenneth Adjei welcomed the Italian delegation and described the longstanding diplomatic relationship between Ghana and Italy as cordial, mutually beneficial and economically important.
He acknowledged Italy’s contribution to Ghana’s national development and highlighted the importance of intelligence sharing, military preparedness and operational cooperation in responding to increasingly complex multinational security challenges.
According to the Defence Minister, Ghana is interested in expanding cooperation with Italy in several critical areas, including modern defence equipment, military logistics, technology transfer and advanced security technologies.
He specifically identified drone technology for aerial surveillance, advanced military engineering and other technological capabilities as areas that could strengthen Ghana’s ability to protect its territorial integrity, national peace and sovereignty.
Minister Adjei expressed optimism that Ghana and Italy could develop innovative joint initiatives capable of strengthening their overall defence architecture and national security cooperation.
Italy Reaffirms Support for Ghana and Regional Security
Italian Ambassador Laura Ranalli congratulated Kenneth Adjei on his appointment as Minister for Defence and reaffirmed the strong relationship between Ghana and Italy.
She said the bilateral relationship remains anchored in mutual trust and cooperation, while expressing Italy’s readiness to expand engagement with Ghana across key security sectors.
The Ambassador also highlighted Italy’s interest in strengthening maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea and supporting efforts to promote stability across the Sahel region.
She assured the Defence Minister that Italy remains committed to supporting regional security priorities through bilateral cooperation, multilateral platforms and the broader European Union security framework.
The latest engagement is expected to provide a foundation for deeper Ghana-Italy military cooperation, particularly in defence technology, intelligence sharing, maritime security, military engineering and regional peace and stability.
