Ghana commemorated the 28th February Crossroads Shooting on Saturday with a sombre flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of the three former soldiers who were murdered by colonial police in 1948.

In the ceremony, Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey are honoured for being shot while walking to deliver a petition to Sir Gerald Creasy, the governor and commander-in-chief at the time. Many people consider the Christianborg Crossroads incident to be a watershed moment in Ghana’s independence movement.

Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the vice president, lay a wreath on behalf of the president and Ghanaians.

Peter Kofi Faidoo, National Chairman of the Veterans Association of Ghana, lay a wreath on behalf of veterans, while William Agyapong, Chief of the Defence Staff, laid one on behalf of the security services.

On behalf of traditional authority, the Osu Alata Mantse, Nii Kwabena Bonne V, also laid a wreath, while Corporal Attipoe’s family members honoured the dead soldiers.

Following a recitation of the events of February 28, 1948, the Last Post, a minute of silence, and the Reveille were sounded throughout the service.

Later, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, along with Chief of Staff in the Office of the President Alex Segbefia, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Akweley Ocloo, and Deputy Minister of Defence Ernest Brogya Genfi, had small talk with veterans.

The yearly commemoration still serves as a remembrance of the slain soldiers’ sacrifices and their lasting significance in Ghana’s democratic past.
