Ghana Creator Education Day is “a milestone in the evolution of Ghana’s digital creative economy,” according to Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations.

The Minister reiterated the government’s “unwavering belief that technology must be the central pillar of our national development” while speaking at the event, which was hosted at the Accra Digital Centre.

He praised bloggers, digital entrepreneurs, media representatives, content producers, and collaborators, such as Ms. Tukumbo Ibrahim, Government Relations and Public Policy Lead for West Africa at TikTok, for their dedication to developing Ghana’s creative economy.

The Ghana Creator Education Day, according to Hon. Nartey George, is a direct response to TikTok’s positive response to a direct challenge he made during a previous courtesy call: to invest directly in Ghanaian creators and go beyond platform access to real empowerment, equitable compensation, and skill development.

In order to establish Ghana as Africa’s premier centre for creative talent, he emphasised that the project is the beginning of a long-term collaboration between the Ministry and TikTok.

He said that in order to achieve this, the Ministry was promoting equitable ecosystem governance, digital infrastructure growth, and policy reforms.

The Minister claims that in order to improve digital integrity and draw in foreign investment, the government is revising the country’s broadcasting policy to conform to digital convergence and is moving forward with important pieces of legislation, such as the Innovation and Startup Bill and the Misinformation and Disinformation Bill.

Beyond amusement, he stated, the collaboration will concentrate on enhancing TikTok’s educational and STEM capabilities, including an upcoming program to teach educators how to use the platform to produce teaching materials in science, math, and English.

The Minister asked TikTok to move quickly on a prospective cooperation with GCB Bank, which made a formal proposal three weeks ago, while emphasising the need for equitable creator pay.

Ghanaian content providers will be able to monetise their work and withdraw their profits through the bank by the end of the year, he said.

Hon. Nartey George described creators as “job creators, storytellers, innovators, and cultural ambassadors” and promised to continue being a “steadfast advocate” for them.

He emphasised the value of diversity by pointing out that five northern Ghanaian creators participated, made possible by a partnership with Grammy-winning musician Rocky Dawuni.
