The Government of Ghana is set to procure 1,200 megawatts (MW) of combined-cycle thermal power capacity as part of a major plan to strengthen the country’s electricity supply and reduce power generation costs.
Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor disclosed that the thermal power project is expected to be completed by 2029.
According to the Energy Minister, the initiative is aimed at ensuring a reliable and stable electricity supply while lowering the cost of generating power for Ghanaian consumers and businesses.
Speaking at the Future of Energy Conference, Mr Jinapor said the government had taken an ambitious decision to secure the additional thermal power capacity using Ghana’s own resources.
The planned investment in thermal power generation is expected to support Ghana’s growing energy needs, improve electricity reliability and strengthen the country’s overall power generation capacity.
