Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has completed major repair works on the Kpong-Tema transmission pipeline, paving the way for the gradual restoration of water supply to affected communities in the Greater Accra and Eastern regions.
The company said it has successfully replaced weakened sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong-Tema pipelines following a maintenance exercise that commenced on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
According to GWL, the repair project was completed on schedule despite several technical and operational challenges encountered during the maintenance exercise.
Kpong Treatment Plant Resumes Water Production
Following the completion of the pipeline repairs, water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant, an important facility serving parts of Greater Accra and the Eastern Region.
GWL, however, cautioned residents that the restoration of water supply would not be immediate across all affected communities.
The company explained that water would return gradually as the Kpong-Tema transmission pipelines and reservoirs are refilled, while operating pressures are progressively restored throughout the distribution network.
GWL said more customers should begin receiving water as the system stabilises, provided there are no unexpected technical problems.
Water Rationing Programme Remains in Effect
Ghana Water Ltd stressed that the resumption of water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant should not be interpreted as an immediate return to continuous water supply in all affected areas.
The company said its Water Demand Management and water rationing programme remains operational to ensure that available water is distributed fairly among consumers.
Customers have therefore been advised to continue following their existing water rationing schedules while the transmission network is recharged and reservoirs are replenished.
GWL also appealed to residents to remain patient as water pressure gradually returns to normal levels.
GWL Managing Director Commends Maintenance Teams
The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, inspected the pipeline repair works at various stages and praised the engineers, contractors, maintenance personnel and technical teams for completing the project on schedule.
He specifically commended the Lead and Chief Manager, ATMA Production, Ing. Dr Hadisu Kappus Alhassan, and the General Manager for Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, together with their respective teams, for their leadership and commitment.
Mr Mutawakilu said the successful completion of the Kpong-Tema pipeline maintenance project demonstrated the importance of teamwork, technical expertise, coordination and effective leadership in addressing critical water infrastructure challenges.
ECG Supports Kpong Water Supply Restoration
The GWL Managing Director also expressed appreciation to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and its Managing Director, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, for supporting the maintenance exercise.
According to Mr Mutawakilu, ECG’s technical team worked closely with Ghana Water Ltd personnel, including during overnight operations, to resolve critical electrical and operational requirements.
The collaboration helped facilitate the timely resumption of water production at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
Greater Accra and Eastern Region Residents Thanked
Ghana Water Ltd also acknowledged the support of the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), contractors, engineers, field officers, technical teams and other stakeholders who contributed to the pipeline repair exercise.
The company expressed appreciation to residents and customers across the Greater Accra and Eastern regions for their patience and cooperation during the temporary disruption to water supply.
GWL said the repaired transmission pipeline would continue to be closely monitored as water supply is progressively restored to affected communities.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to proactive water infrastructure maintenance, pipeline modernisation and improved water supply services in Ghana.
