At a formal event held at the Villa Dome of the Presidency, the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) officially began its 40th anniversary celebrations with the theme “From Resource to Reality: 40 Years of Impact and Innovation.”
In addition to executives from ExxonMobil, the African Petroleum Producers Organization (APPO), and representatives from the international oil and gas industry, the historic event brought together Ghana’s leadership, including Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Mr. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, Mr. John Abdulai Jinapor, Minister for Energy and Green Transition, and Senior Presidential Advisors.
The CEO of GNPC, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, welcomed attendees and gave a reflection on the company’s transformational journey during his keynote presentation.
“Forty years ago, GNPC was established with a bold vision: to ensure Ghana’s sovereignty over its petroleum resources and position our nation as a capable player in the global energy space. What began as a small team with ambitious dreams has grown into a corporation at the centre of Ghana’s economic and industrial development,” he stated.
The Jubilee, TEN, and Sankofa Gye Nyame discoveries, which brought Ghana into commercial oil production over the previous 15 years, were among the historic achievements made by GNPC, which Mr. Amoah commended for its ability to persevere in the face of financial, technical, and policy obstacles.
He recollected GNPC’s innovative nature, pointing out that the company drilled the first horizontal well in Africa in the 1990s.
“Our journey has been shaped by the brilliance and dedication of remarkable engineers, geoscientists, lawyers, economists, administrators, and policymakers. I salute our past and current heads of state, ministers, chairmen, CEOs, and boards for believing in Ghana’s energy story and laying the foundation for our future,” he continued, acknowledging the legacy of GNPC’s personnel and partners.
“Energy transition is no longer a choice but an imperative,” Mr. Amoah said, highlighting GNPC’s preparedness to take the lead in an era characterized by digitalization, sustainability, and energy transition.
As part of President John Dramani Mahama’s Reset and Growth Agenda, GNPC is taking decisive action to improve exploration and production by using creative funding, expanding operating capacities, and utilizing new technologies.
The night also highlighted GNPC’s aspirational ten-year plan.
The CEO said, “As we unveil GNPC at 40, let this moment mark the opening of a new chapter where the legacy of the past four decades inspires our ambition to venture into uncharted territories. In this year of GNPC at 40, we aim to achieve beyond the Reset and Growth Agenda to become a leading oil and gas company by GNPC at 50.”
The opening sets the tone for a year-long schedule of events that honor GNPC’s past, celebrate accomplishments, and map an ambitious course for the company’s four decades of existence.
