Osei Bonsu Amoah, the upcoming minister of state for local government and rural development, has urged Ghanaians to recognize the difference between government appointees and public employees.
He claims that lumping these two groups together would always provide the wrong impression of the size of the government when that is not the case.
He asserted that since the government already employs the largest number of people, there should be no grounds for complaint when it hires because it gives people tasks to do.
On Tuesday, February 21, Mr. O.B. Amoah made the decision during his open examination by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.
The Minister of State-designate claimed that a downsizing process has been going on ever since the government started its second term in response to a query about the size of the government and the call for it.
He claims that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akfo-Addo has already dismantled a number of ministries, including Monitoring and Evaluation, Zongo, Procurement, Regional Reorganization, and several more.
However, skeleton staff have been kept on hand to run these institutions, he argued, so when someone from the presidency is appointed to oversee the Special Development Initiative, for example, it is because the program is still in place and cannot be eliminated simply because the ministry is no longer in operation.
He emphasized that their services are definitely needed because these people would have to oversee and assume ownership of projects after they are finished.
O.B. Amoah urged non-partisan discussion to identify the concerns and emphasized that it is not always wise to compare because others may have grievances with the selections made by the previous administration.
What purpose does it serve to say, “You have 800 employees, therefore don’t complain if I have 600 employees?”
Though some may still maintain that the number is still too great, all of these people have a part to play, he said. “Let’s probe it in an academic and right way.
Speaking about his responsibilities at the Ministry, he said that as a Minister of State, he would assist the substantive minister in carrying out his duties effectively.
He maintained that because he served as a deputy minister under the local government minister, there was no chance of a conflict. He further emphasized that he had a great working relationship with the Hon. Dan Botwe.
