The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has announced a series of immediate operational measures to address increasing landside congestion at the Port of Tema, as authorities work to improve cargo movement and restore smooth port operations.
The intervention is aimed at reducing delays in container evacuation, cargo transportation and the movement of laden and empty containers within and around the Tema port enclave.
According to the GPHA, the recent congestion has been largely driven by a sharp increase in import volumes, coupled with a corresponding rise in the export of empty containers.
The Authority also identified growing road traffic congestion around the Port of Tema as another major factor contributing to delays in cargo movement and container evacuation.
GPHA Intensifies Port Operations
The GPHA said it has activated enhanced operational measures to address the situation and ensure that the Port of Tema continues to operate efficiently.
Relevant stakeholders have also been placed on heightened operational alert to support efforts aimed at reducing congestion and improving the movement of cargo through the port.
The Authority is working with stakeholders across the port and logistics chain to accelerate the evacuation of containers and improve traffic flow within the port environment.
Port Congestion Affects West Africa
GPHA explained that the challenges facing the Port of Tema are part of a broader congestion problem being experienced at several ports across the West African sub-region.
The regional increase in cargo volumes has contributed to delays in the evacuation of containers, as well as the transportation of both laden and empty containers.
Despite the challenges, GPHA assured shipping lines, importers, exporters, freight forwarders, transport operators and other stakeholders that measures are being implemented to stabilise operations.
The Authority said the enhanced interventions are expected to help restore normal cargo flow at the Port of Tema, reduce container-related delays and support more efficient Ghana port and logistics operations.
The latest measures highlight the importance of effective port infrastructure, efficient cargo handling and improved road connectivity to Ghana’s international trade and supply chain.
