According to the Ministry of Education (MoE), former President John Dramani Mahama’s remarks about the 2023 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results are an attempt to minimize the advancements in educational performance.
In a statement released on Friday, December 29, the Ministry of Education reassured the public, parents, guardians, and students that there has not been, and will not be, a compromise in the quality of instruction and exams at any levels, including the WASSCE.
A “calculated attempt to downplay the great strides made by the Ministry in improving learning outcomes in the country,” according to the Ministry, is what Mr. Mahama claimed.
The Ministry emphasized the noteworthy advancement in WASSCE outcomes, highlighting a notable rise from a 2015 score of 28.7 percent (A1-C6) in Integrated Science to an astounding 66.80 percent attained by 2023 applicants for the WASSCE under President Nana Akuffo Addo.
“We have made monumental progress, and over the past few years, WAEC has instituted several measures to curb exam malpractices during the BECE and WASSCE test administration,” the Ministry said. They reiterated the strict supervision measures implemented by WAEC in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service, ensuring the integrity of the examinations.
“The Ministry of Education wishes to assure our students, parents, guardians, and the general public that the quality of education and examinations at all levels, including the WASSCE, was not and will not be compromised,” the statement added.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer claimed that the recent student exercise was marred by misconduct and predicted that the consequences will eventually affect the entire country.
The former president said that certain invigilators assisted students in answering the questions during his “Building Ghana Tour” stop in the Central region, which included a visit to the Mfantseman Constituency. The previous president was ensuring that candidates completed independent work.
His accusations of cheating come after Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, declared that the 2023 WASSCE results are the finest the country has seen since 2015.
