The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is currently taking place, and the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has declared that those who have been arrested for violating the rules are being prepared for court.
Over nine people have been taken into custody in an attempt to maintain the integrity of the test.
WAEC emphasized in a statement released on Tuesday, July 9, 2024, that lengthy briefing sessions were held with Supervisors and District Directors of Education prior to the start of the exams.
The purpose of these workshops was to acquaint them with the latest regulations overseeing the examination procedure.
“Among other things, the supervisors were informed that they were prohibited from bringing along mobile phones to the examination centres. A stern warning was issued against this practice,” WAEC stated. “They are Patience Serwaah, Oscar Ben Azumah, and Thomas Gyimadu. Other persons who were unrelated to the examination but came around attempting to assist the candidates are Christian Osei and Kyei Baffour Alex,” WAEC revealed.
Though these orders were rather obvious, some opted to disobey them, which resulted in their detention by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and agents that WAEC recruited locally; the agents subsequently turned them over to the police.
Three professors who tried to help the candidates at the Save Our Souls Educational Center in Bekwai were taken into custody.
At the Jinijini Senior High School Center, there have been additional breaches recorded. Two invigilators were observed taking pictures of the English Language exam papers and sharing them on the “Koraso Ma JHS” WhatsApp platform.
Furthermore, Abeam Danso, an invigilator at Nkoranza Senior High School, was detained in possession of a cell phone that had the answers to the questions about religious and moral education on it.
Amoako Joseph, a teacher at Chemu Senior High School in Tema, was arrested for capturing images of exam papers and sharing them on the website “Apor Lord for BECE, 2024.”
An invigilator named Faaweerie Patrick was caught taking images of the Science paper at the Liberty Hills School and turned himself in to the police.
Danso Emmanuel, an invigilator, was discovered in the examination hall of the Jachie Pramso SHS center in the Ashanti Region with a phone, and Mensah Emmanuel, another invigilator, was discovered in possession of pieces of paper that contained the answers to the English Language subject.
Teachers from DESVY International School were found on their school bus at the Santoe Basic School center, working through science problems in order to pass them on to their students in the exam room.
According to WAEC, “They are Thomas Ativor, 37, a Twi language teacher, Emmanuel Ammisah, 47, a mathematics teacher, Edwin Goodluck, 39, a Science teacher, and Richard Boateng, 32, a Computing teacher,”
“They are all being processed for court and have all been reported to the police,” WAEC continued.
