Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, is advocating for a large-scale protest akin to the recent rallies in Kenya to oppose the sale of four SSNIT Hotels to Rock City, a business owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong.
Widespread youth protests in Kenya recently compelled the government to rescind a budget bill that included contentious tax increases. Tuesday, June 25, 2024, saw the burning of their parliament as a result of the protests getting more violent.
Referencing these occurrences, Mr. Ablakwa chastised President Akufo-Addo for continuing with the sale of SSNIT hotels despite having spoken with organized workers earlier this week.
The President has not wavered in the face of a protest against the sale called “Hands Off Our Hotels.”
Mr. Ablakwa further accused Elizabeth Ohene, the chair of the SSNIT board that Akufo-Addo nominated, of defending the agreement in the face of strong resistance from Ghanaians and objections from the board’s labor members.
In a Facebook post, he declared that Ghanaians should begin their own version of the recent protests in Kenya, claiming that President Akufo-Addo is the main architect behind this contentious deal.
