Nearly three months after President John Dramani Mahama reiterated his government’s commitment to finishing the project, construction on the long-delayed La General Hospital has accelerated.

Residents, many of whom have experienced years without a significant public health facility serving the La enclave and adjacent villages, are feeling more optimistic as a result of the revived activities.

On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, engineers and construction workers were observed working on significant structural projects, such as casting concrete pillars and finishing the third-floor building’s roof slab.

Additionally, masonry work was moving forward in various parts of the building, indicating that several project phases are moving forward at the same time.

On April 24, 2026, President Mahama visited the project and gave the locals his word that the hospital will be finished and operational by November 2027 following years of delayed development.

Patients, including pregnant women, children, the elderly, and emergency cases, were forced to seek treatment at more distant hospitals like Ridge Hospital and LEKMA Hospital after the old La General Hospital was demolished in 2020, leaving residents of La, Teshie, Nungua, and neighbouring communities without a vital referral facility.

Many locals see the project’s apparent development as a sign of better healthcare access, shorter emergency travel times, and less strain on the Greater Accra Region’s other medical institutions.

A resident described the recent pace of work as encouraging and expressed confidence that the contractor could achieve the completion date.

Some neighbourhood members have expressed concerns that progress has stagnated in recent weeks, despite the renewed hope.

They say that after the President’s visit, several employees were let go because of financial difficulties, which they worry could have an impact on the project’s timeline.

Another resident, claimed that due of the workforce’s financial limitations, there has been less construction activity over the past month.

With more beds, more specialised medical services, and better emergency treatment for thousands of locals, the new La General Hospital is anticipated to greatly enhance healthcare delivery in the Greater Accra Region once it is finished.
