Drug misuse is a public health, social, and development issue that goes beyond law enforcement, according to Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, who has urged for a more comprehensive national response.

At the 2026 International Day Against Drug misuse and Illicit Trafficking (World Drug Day) commemoration on Monday, July 6, 2026, Mr. Debrah spoke on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama and stated that drug misuse still poses a threat to families, communities, and the future of Ghana’s children.

“Drug abuse is more than a security challenge. It is a public health, social and developmental issue that threatens families, communities and the potential of our young people,” he stated.

According to him, the government is still dedicated to stepping up efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking while increasing access to services for addicts in need of treatment, recovery, and reintegration.

He claims that the government’s strategy also places a high priority on prevention by funding youth employment options, education, and skill development.

“This administration remains focused on creating opportunities for young people through education, skills development and employment because prevention begins with hope, purpose and opportunity,” he said.

The Chief of Staff advised youth to protect their future by abstaining from drug usage.

“To every young Ghanaian: your future is priceless, protect it,” he declared.

In order to reaffirm their commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking through prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation, and sustained collaboration, government officials, security agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, traditional and religious leaders, and young people came together for the event, which had as its theme “The World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses.”
