West African governments have officially approved the long-awaited Nigeria-Morocco Atlantic Gas Pipeline, one of the continent’s most ambitious energy infrastructure projects.
Nigerian gas will be transported to Morocco via the massive 6,000 km (3,700 miles) pipeline, which will run down the Atlantic coast of 14 African countries before connecting to Europe’s current gas network via Spain.
With a projected total cost of $25 billion (£19 billion), construction is anticipated to start in 2028. However, from January 1, 2026, the local currency’s value against the US dollar has increased by roughly 0.50% in the retail sector.
At the forex bureaus, it is now selling for GH¢12.20 to one US dollar. In July 2026, the cedi lost value in the interbank market by 9.5% and 7.1%, respectively, compared to the pound and the euro.
