The act of Lydia Seyram Alhassan, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, giving out food to voters at the special voting exercise on Monday, December 2, 2024, has been denounced by the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

A contentious discussion over voter influence and election ethics in Ghana has been triggered by this episode.

Sharing food or cash with voters in line is against electoral regulations, according to CHRAJ Commissioner Dr. Joseph Whittal, who called Alhassan’s acts “tantamount to corruption.”

Later, Lydia Seyram Alhassan defended her actions, saying they were motivated by compassion, after originally denying the occurrence.

She clarified that when voters were exhausted or hungry, she gave them food and water.
