There is no justification, according to former president and National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, for the Inspector General of Police Dr. George Dampare’s decision to place Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor, a parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, in police custody on the advice of the National Security Advisor, Albert Kan Dapaah.
Mr. Mahama claims that this action, which was carried out per the National Security Secretariat’s orders, will unnecessarily increase political tension and heat in the nation.
Months before the key national elections, he warned the Police Service and the IGP in a Facebook post not to let themselves to be used as a prop for the peace and stability of the country.
Mr. Mahama urged the IGP, the Peace Council, the government, and the Ghanaian people to acknowledge that upholding justice is not only morally required, but also a necessary precondition for preserving national peace and stability.
“We cannot allow the police service to be used to stifle opposition and intimidate innocent Ghanaians and political opponents in the run-up to the 2024 elections,” he posted.
In a clear statement, Mr. Mahama stated that the purpose of her arrest after being granted bail was to frighten the NDC parliamentary candidate in her endeavor to unseat Hawa Koomson, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, in the Awutu Senya East Constituency.
The NDC Flagbearer implored the IGP to urgently reevaluate his course of action and promptly free Naa Koryoo for the sake of national stability and justice.
“It is high time the police fulfilled their duty to serve and protect all citizens, irrespective of their political affiliations.” he reiterated
Background
After violent altercations between supporters of the NDC and NPP over the voter transfer procedure, which resulted in the stabbing of the son of sitting MP Hawa Koomson, Madam Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor was placed under arrest.
