President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the key players in the National Service Authority (NSA) ghost names controversy to be listed as sought, their assets tracked down, and their accounts frozen until the investigations are finished.
In his first-ever State of the Nation Address to Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025, President Mahama disclosed that more than 80,000 fictitious names had been introduced to the payroll at some stage, potentially syphoning more than GHS 50 million a month.
He added that it is thought that some individuals have left the nation in order to avoid being prosecuted.
The President has also instructed the Minister for Youth Development and Empowerment to coordinate the creation of a Legislative Instrument (LI) to assist in the execution of the National Service Authority Act 2024 (Act 1119) in an effort to improve the governance of the National Service Scheme.
Mahama claims that by taking this action, future financial misconduct will be avoided and a legally sound foundation for administering the National Service Scheme will be ensured.
