The position of Minister-designate for Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts has been given to Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Member of Parliament for Ketu South Constituency.

On Thursday, January 16, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama announced this nomination.

Abla Dzifa Gomashie is a well-known actress, screenwriter, producer, and politician.

From 2013 to 2017, when John Mahama established the ministry, she was the National Democratic Congress’s Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts. She is currently a Queen Mother in the Aflao Traditional Area and the NDC’s Member of Parliament for the Ketu South Constituency.

Profile:

Dzifa Gomashie is a graduate of the University of Ghana with a Master of Philosophy in African Studies (2005-2008), a Bachelor of Fine Arts (2000-2003) with First-Class Honors from the University of Ghana’s School of Performing Arts, and a Diploma in Theatre Arts (1994-1998).

She has devoted her life to furthering causes related to the arts, culture, and legacy because of her unrestrained passion for them. She was instrumental in setting the groundwork for the review and development of documents like the Ghana Culture Policy and the Creative Arts Industry Bill, among other initiatives that are slowly taking shape in the sector, while she served as the Deputy Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.

She brought to the appointment her extensive industrial experience, both domestically in Ghana and abroad. She is a member of the African Union Film Federation’s FEPACI committee. She is also a member of the ECOWAS committee for the reparation of Africa’s stolen artifacts, serving as its rapporteur.

She also played a key role in the establishment of the Creative Arts Council (now the Creative Arts Agency), an organization tasked with regulating and coordinating the operations of the thirteen subfields that make up the cultural and creative industries.

Some professionals in the creative arts have said that she is a strong contender for the role of substantive minister (rather than deputy minister this time around) due to her relevant prior experience working at the Ministry. They think she has a higher chance of returning to the ministry as a result of this experience.

The Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Tourism Development Company, National Film Authority, National Commission on Culture, National Theatre, National Folklore Board, Creative Arts Agency, Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, Dubois Center, National Museum, Hotel, Catering & Tourism Training Institute, and Bureau of Ghana Languages are among the thirteen agencies under the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, and Creative Arts.
