According to the parliamentary minority, the administration must be transparent about the chronic load shedding affecting Ghanaians.

The recent widespread chronic power outages, popularly known as “dumsor,” that have been recorded across the nation, particularly during peak hours, have apparently caused the Minority great alarm.

“This seems to be getting worse as many areas of the nation experience lengthy periods of darkness without warning to consumers.

According to a press release from the ranking member of the mines and energy committee, John Abdulai Jinapor, “While most Ghanaians have been experiencing intermittent power outages, others have been experiencing low currents and occasionally high voltage, leading to damages of their electrical gadgets and equipment in some cases.”

It is a well-known reality, particularly among players in the energy industry, that the current outages the nation is suffering are caused by gas shortages combined with significant difficulties in obtaining alternative fuels because of the perilous financial situation of the Energy sector SOEs.

“Despite receiving more than 20 billion cedis in ESLA revenues and over 40 billion cedis in petroleum revenues under their administration, the majority of the Energy sector SOEs have continued to experience worsening financial conditions.

More distressing, according to him, is the government’s and the energy sector SOEs’ choice to remain silent while the average Ghanaian is forced to endure this unnecessary state of load shedding.

“We, therefore, call on the Government and responsible government agencies to come clean about the current state of power outages as a matter of urgency and provide a schedule, if necessary, to enable the average consumer and industry to plan and avoid damages to their electrical equipment,” the petition reads.
