Ghana’s mobile money ecosystem processed a record GH¢518 billion in transactions in December 2025, indicating the country’s shift towards a digitised, cashless economy.

Mobile money, which was once limited to basic one-on-one transfers, now underlies Ghana’s daily financial life. It serves as the retail economy’s heartbeat by facilitating bill payments, merchant purchases, savings, payroll, and government transactions.

According to the Bank of Ghana’s Summary of Economic and Financial Data, December was the greatest month ever recorded for mobile money, in terms of both value and usage.

Transaction volumes increased to 982 million, up from 892 million in November, owing mostly to festive-season spending during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

However, the figures reveal more than just seasonal demand. Fundamentally, the mobile money ecosystem is growing.

The overall number of registered accounts surpassed 80.5 million, and the number of active accounts increased to 26.7 million.

Wallet balances rose concurrently to a peak of GH¢39.6 billion in 2025, indicating a growth in confidence in digital platforms for both transactions and asset storage.

It’s amazing how much more popular mobile money is than conventional payment options.

Only GH¢37.3 billion was paid with checks, compared to over GH¢518 billion in mobile transactions. In terms of scale, even electronic payment services like GhIPSS Instant Pay, which recorded GH¢73.3 billion, fell well short.

Rising the use of smartphones, a sizable agent network of around 491,000, and enhanced interoperability are cited by industry observers as major growth factors.

In December, interoperable transactions alone totalled GH¢5.8 billion, indicating increased cross-network interaction.

Millions of Ghanaians who were previously unbanked or underbanked were able to access the formal financial system thanks in large part to mobile money.

It has increased client access, decreased cash-handling risks, and increased efficiency for businesses, especially small and medium-sized organisations.

The GH¢518 billion milestone serves as compelling proof of mobile money’s revolutionary influence on trade, inclusion, and economic activity as Ghana moves forward with its digital transformation goal.
