In a statement released on Thursday, January 18, Mr. Awini Zinge, the head of the Woyongo Family, acknowledged the death of Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo, 74, a former member of parliament for Navrongo Central and minister of defense.
On Wednesday, January 17, in the Bank of Ghana Hospital in Accra, Mr. Woyongo, who had been ill for some time, passed away.
After representing Navrongo Central as a member of parliament from 2012 to 2016, Mr. Woyongo made an official announcement in December 2016 that he was leaving politics and would no longer be seeking office.
Following the passing of the late President John Evans Atta Mills in 2009, Mr. Woyongo served as the Upper East Regional Minister under the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama.
In 2013, President Mahama submitted a nomination for him to be the Minister of Defense. Two years later, he received another nomination to be the Interior Minister.
