The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been accused by Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) caucus in Parliament, of using Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s concession speech to influence the results of particular constituency parliamentary elections.
The NPP flagbearer, Dr. Bawumia, politely conceded loss to John Mahama at a press conference shortly after the polls.
He disclosed that, before to the Electoral Commission formally announcing the results, he had contacted the president-elect to congratulate him on his win.
Afenyo-Markin, however, feels that this act of statesmanship unintentionally gave the NDC the right to utilize violence in order to gain seats in parliament.
“The violence with which the NDC used to snatch some of our seats was unprecedented,” Afenyo-Markin asserted.
“They took advantage of Dr. Bawumia’s concession speech and went all out to unleash deliberate, intentional, and well-organized violence.
“While election-related violence is not new, this was on a different scale. To my dismay, some Members of Parliament, whom I deeply respect, were actively leading the violence.”
He notably brought up events in the Tema Central constituency, where he said that violence was planned in order to help the NDC candidate win.
