A stop-work order has been issued by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) for a construction project that some Chinese contractors are currently working on at FD 28 Amadan Street, North Kaneshie.

The order requires the contractors to provide the required building permit and official receipts for the development.

The order was given while Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the mayor of Accra, conducted a working tour to various areas of the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District to examine building permits, sanitation conditions, and adherence to Assembly laws.

According to the Mayor, the Assembly would not permit any developer, contractor, or business to carry out building inside the city without the necessary AMA clearance.

He issued a warning that until the required permits and receipts were presented for verification, all active building and demolition projects without the required paperwork would be put on hold.

The Mayor issued a warning, stating that developers who disregarded the Assembly’s planning regulations would be subject to penalties such as stop-work orders, fines, legal action, and possibly the demolition of unapproved buildings.

In order to make sure that developers had fulfilled all legal criteria before to starting work, the AMA also verified building permits and official receipts at a few construction sites.

In addition to stating that the Assembly would not compromise on public safety, orderly development, and adherence to approved building procedures, the Mayor ordered contractors working on the Melcom Plus building to stop any further work beyond the scope of the approved renovation permit.

According to Hon. Allotey, the goal of the effort was to make sure that all developments in Accra were appropriately controlled, safe, and compliant with the city’s planning regulations rather than to annoy companies or investors.

Before starting any building or demolition projects, he advised developers, contractors, property owners, and business owners to regularise their documentation with the Assembly.

The Mayor promised that the AMA would keep conducting regular inspections around the city to confirm permits, look for unapproved developments, and make sure developers followed the Assembly’s bylaws.

He restated the Assembly’s commitment to re-establishing order in the built environment and making sure that development in Accra was done in a way that was safe, legal, and orderly.
