The largest bitumen processing plant in Ghana was commissioned today, September 12, 2024, by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in Tema, Accra.
A joint venture between Ghana’s GOIL PLC and Côte d’Ivoire’s Société Multinationale de Bitumes (SMB) produced the $40 million state-of-the-art facility. These products, which provide improved performance in adverse weather and with high traffic volumes, are essential to the construction of long-lasting road infrastructure. PMB, created by mixing polymers with regular bitumen, is well-known for having exceptional strength, flexibility, and resilience to cracking, which makes it perfect for usage in high-stress locations like airport runways and roads.
On the other hand, bitumen emulsions are employed in road building and maintenance, providing eco-friendly alternatives that lessen the requirement for high temperatures during application.

“Since 2017, we have embarked on the most extensive road construction program in Ghana’s history, with over 12,000 kilometers of roads built,” he said. “This facility will complement the government’s efforts, producing the necessary volumes of polymer modified bitumen and bitumen emulsions to meet the growing demands of our infrastructure sector.”
