A major turning point in the strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between Ghana and France was reached yesterday, Wednesday when President John Dramani Mahama and his French counterpart, President Emmanuel Macron, had high-level bilateral discussions at the Élysée Palace.

Following the successful end of the One Health Summit in Lyon, which both leaders co-chaired on Tuesday, the meeting took place at President Macron’s formal request.

President Macron conveyed his sincere appreciation to President Mahama for his leadership in co-hosting the Lyon summit throughout the discussions. President Macron declared that Ghana has been chosen as the first recipient of the recently established National Health Compact, highlighting Ghana’s expanding significance in international health policy.

Additionally, the French leader praised President Mahama’s ambitious framework, the Accra Reset Initiative. The initiative’s ideas were often cited as a guide during the Lyon summit, according to Macron, who called it “very important.”

President Mahama, for his part, noted the One Health Summit’s vital significance to the World Health Organization (WHO) and worldwide pandemic preparedness while expressing gratitude for the cordial welcome and the chance to co-chair the event.

Regarding the economy, President Mahama formally expressed gratitude to China and France for their crucial contributions to Ghana’s debt restructuring efforts. The Ghanaian economy has shown remarkably resilient, he told President Macron, adding that “the economy has bounced back and is doing very well, with very positive indicators.”

Building on years of support from the French Development Agency (AFD), the Accra-Kumasi Motorway, ensuring food security through year-round farming initiatives, advancing the development of artificial intelligence (AI), and strengthening support for maternal health services are just a few of the many development cooperation topics that the two leaders discussed.

President Mahama underlined that a common commitment to democracy, the rules-based international system, and world peace is the foundation of Ghana-France’s strong partnership.

President Mahama declared, “Ghana and France stand together on key issues of peace and security,” as the two leaders examined how international crises affect far-off countries and talked about ways to keep the West African subregion stable.

The President of the French Senate met with President Mahama and his entourage before they arrived at the Élysée Palace.
