The accused were taken into custody on April 2, 2026, at approximately 18:00 hours, according to DCOP Dr. Francis Kwame Tsidi, the Western North Regional Police Command Commander.
Five individuals have been detained by the Western North Regional Police Command for allegedly robbing mining sites in Sefwi Bekwai and the surrounding area while impersonating as National Security (NS) agents.
The suspects are Richard Gyapong, 35; Okasha Mohammed, 19; Toffic Bawa, 24; Iddrisu Abdalla, 20; and Abdul Rahaman Abubakar, 21.
According to police, the suspects used security-style uniforms to enter mining facilities without authorisation, intimidating employees and stealing goods and equipment.
The Regional Command conducted an intelligence-led operation that resulted in their detention.
The Regional Commander told reporters in Sefwi-Wiawso that the operation was planned and that the suspects were transported from Kumasi to a mining location at Suiaboi in the Dadieso region.
He stated that under the pretence of official tasks, the group operated in the Suiaboi and surrounding areas, requiring miners to provide documentation and confiscating goods. The accused have been connected to other robberies in the Bekwai region through police investigations.
After failing to halt at the Mpesiem Police snap roadblock, three of the suspects were initially apprehended on an unregistered motorbike.
They allegedly broke into rooms, damaged equipment, and stole GH¢2,000 and cell phones from the location.
Vehicles batteries, water pumping apparatus, cell phones, a live AA cartridge and military camouflage trousers were found during a search of a hired vehicles.
The suspects will be arraigned in court after being detained to aid with investigations.
The public has been asked by the police to report suspicious activity and confirm the identification of anyone posing as a security personnel.
