The 60th anniversary launch of the Cedi will be place in Accra on October 28, 2025, with President John Dramani Mahama as the honoured guest.

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) is hosting the event, which has as its topic “60 Years of the Cedi: A Symbol of Sovereignty, Stability, and Economic Resilience.” It draws attention to the Ghanaian cedi’s development as a currency and a representation of the nation’s economic development and independence from 1957.

The Cedi@60 campaign will “honour the cedi’s enduring role as a cornerstone of Ghana’s economic identity,” according to the central bank, and promote a resurgence of national trust in the native currency.

As stated in a release, the Bank of Ghana,

“The cedi is more than a currency; it represents our sovereignty, resilience, and collective belief in Ghana’s future.”

Discussions on monetary innovation and digital finance, as well as displays of previous currency designs, are anticipated to be included in the event.

Ghana took a significant step towards economic independence and the end of colonial control on July 19, 1965, when it formally adopted the Cedi as its national currency.

The Cedi has had numerous modifications, redesigns, and policy changes over the last 60 years, and it now represents Ghana’s tenacity, independence, and development in addition to being a monetary instrument.

Postponement

The Cedi@60 Anniversary national launch celebrations, which were supposed to take place at the Accra International Conference Centre on Friday, August 8, 2025, have been rescheduled until a later date.

The decision was made after His Excellency, President John Dramani, announced a three-day National Mourning in response to the helicopter tragedy that claimed the lives of two state ministers and six others yesterday, August 6, 2015.

The Bank is grateful for its stakeholders’ and the public’s cooperation and understanding during this time of national grief.
