Ahead of the elections on December 7, the National Peace Council will meet with representatives from all political parties and their presidential candidates today to sign the Peace Pact.

Promoting peaceful behavior amongst political parties in the general election scheduled for December 7 is the goal of the Peace Pact.

The goal of the public pledge is to send a good message to the parties’ and candidates’ support bases in order to deter violence and foster national unity.

Political parties and their leaders agree to uphold the electoral process, accept the results of the elections, and settle any disagreements amicably by signing the agreement.

This lessens conflict, fosters trust, and makes political players feel more accountable.

In order to foster peace and stability during the general election, the accord has grown to be an important component of the nation’s electoral process.

At a meeting with Mohammed Lawan Gana, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Resident Representative in Ghana, and the advanced team of the ECOWAS Observer Mission in Accra last Thursday, George Amoh, the Executive Secretary of the National Peace Council, stated that the Peace Council had been working nonstop to make sure that all parties involved were committed to holding peaceful elections.

He pointed out that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and the presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), had previously expressed his desire to sign the agreement.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, have also indicated their willingness to sign the peace agreement, according to the NPC’s executive secretary.

According to Mr. Amoh, the NDC’s letter to the Peace Council also contained several recommendations for improving the pact’s responsiveness and effectiveness.

According to him, the Peace Council is now attempting to fulfill the NDC’s request.

Mr. Amoh went on to say that the NPC was trying to arrange for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to sign the Peace Pact as the honored guest.

Before the party would consent to join the 2024 Peace Pact, the NDC had listed six requirements that the Peace Council needed to meet.

It calls for the prosecution of those involved in the violent incidents and killings that took place during the 2020 elections, the full implementation of the Ayawaso West Wuogon Commission’s recommendations to address past electoral violence and ensure justice, and calls for legal action against those involved in the illegal printing of ballot papers, which in some ways compromises the electoral process.

The others include the President publicly announcing his acceptance of the people’s will in the general election of 2024, the transparent and public resolution of the missing biometric devices at the Electoral Commission’s office, and the signing of the Peace Pact by the President, Chief Justice, Attorney General, and Inspector General of Police (IGP).
