A request to reconvene the House by the majority in Parliament was denied by Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin, with less than two weeks to go before Ghana’s general elections on December 7.
Speaker Bagbin clarified in a message released on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, that the present Parliamentary session will only reconvene following the elections in order to address important legislative issues.
He claimed that this was a part of the measures to make sure the Fourth Republic’s transition to the 9th Parliament went smoothly.
“The House will resume sitting after the elections to complete all essential matters before a seamless transition to the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana,” the Speaker stated.
The decision is made as parliamentarians concentrate on their individual campaigns as political activity picks up steam around the country in the run-up to the elections.
When Parliament meets again after the election, it is anticipated to discuss unfinished legislative issues.
