The National Security Secretariat has named Richard Jakpa, a businessman and former military officer, Director of Special Operations. According to sources, his appointment went into effect on January 31, 2025.

His role in the raid on the home of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta last week has been confirmed, ending any rumors.

A forced entry was first reported, but fresh information shows that Mr. Jakpa and his crew had a legal warrant and were allowed admission by Mr. Ofori-Atta’s security staff.

A group of approximately twelve people, five dressed in military uniforms, one in a police outfit, and the remaining individuals in plain clothing, were identified by witnesses as carrying out the raid.

Official sources, however, make it clear that the operation was carried out legally.

Mr. Jakpa will be in charge of the preparation and implementation of both overt and covert operations in his capacity as Director of Special Operations.

Creating early warning systems for new dangers like organized crime, terrorism, and insurgency is another aspect of his job.

He will also be in charge of overseeing crisis response activities during national security situations, making sure special forces and fast reaction units are prepared, and carrying out other strategic tasks as delegated by the Chief Director or National Security Coordinator.

The government’s commitment to strengthening national security operations, especially in tackling complex security concerns, is demonstrated by Mr. Jakpa’s nomination.
