Despite strong opposition from the Minority caucus, Parliament has confirmed all seven of President John Dramani Mahama’s Supreme Court appointments.

Following a contentious plenary debate and a resounding voice vote, the decision opens the door for the nominees to be formally promoted to the highest court.

The day after the Appointments Committee’s final report was presented, the House’s majority side won.

The Minority had already voiced their strong objection to the nominees, claiming that the appointments created constitutional issues and were in conflict with the Chief Justice’s recent suspension.

They claimed that the Supreme Court had abdicated its duty by keeping quiet about recent judicial developments that they characterized as a violation of natural justice.

Minority members argued that the committee’s report did not sufficiently address their complete complaints when they presented their position during floor discussions.

They reiterated their opposition to each of the seven nominees.

“All Minority members opposed and voted against the nomination of the seven judges. Mr. Speaker, based on the meeting we had this afternoon, the recording of the meeting will indicate that everybody on the Minority side said no, “First Deputy Speaker, Bernard Ahiafor

The Majority’s support guaranteed the nominees’ acceptance in spite of the Minority’s objections.

These are the recently confirmed justices:

1. Justice Sir Dennis Dominic Adjei
2. Justice Gbiel Simon Suurbaareh
3. Justice Senyo Dzamefe
4. Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo
5. Justice Philip Bright Mensah
6. Justice Janapare Bartels-Kodwo
7. Justice Hafisata Amaleboba

President John Dramani Mahama is currently awaiting their official swearing-in.
