Shalimar Abbiusi, a Belgian national, had her visa revoked by the Ghana Immigration Service; she was taken back to Belgium.
Tuesday, she was deported. This came after prosecutors had earlier in the day retracted an alleged fraudulent declaration made in order to get a student permit.
In an interview, Abbiusi’s attorney, Francis Xavier Sosu, verified her departure and called the deportation process an affront to her basic human rights.
“I received information that she was being escorted to board the Brussels Airlines flight to Belgium at some point last night. However, it is obvious how abhorrent and terrible this is.
“Because she was not deported from Ghana and there was no deportation order by the Minister but an Executive Instrument. So holding her and even denying her access to her lawyers and even her Family and escorting her with men in uniform was a violation. When you revoked the person’s visa and said that leave our jurisdiction within 24 hours, she could move from Ghana to Togo. She has the Liberty to move anywhere else that she can go.”
The Kaneshie District Court last week granted Shalimar Abbiusi bail in the amount of GHc20,000 with two sureties.
