The Leader and Director of the Anbariya Sunni Community in Ghana’s Northern Region, Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria, has reportedly died at the age of an undisclosed number.
Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria passed away on Monday, September 7, 2026, in the Greater Accra Region while receiving medical treatment.
The announcement was made by the Anbariya Sunni Community, with the group’s Second-in-Command, Sheikh Abubakar Tanko Is-haq, and other elders expressing deep sorrow over the death of the respected Islamic scholar and religious leader.
In a statement signed by the General Secretary, Dr. Issah Yakubu Abdallah, the community described Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria as a distinguished Imam, Islamic scholar and devoted servant of Allah.
“It is with deep sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved Imam, the Director and Leader of the Anbariya Sunni Community; Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria.”
The statement said his death represents a significant loss to the Anbariya Sunni Community, his family and the wider Muslim community in Ghana.
The community prayed for Allah to forgive the deceased, accept his good deeds and grant him Jannatul Firdaus. It also called for patience and strength for his immediate family, members of the Anbariya Sunni Community and the entire Muslim Ummah.
Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria Funeral and Janazah
The Islamic funeral prayer (Janazah) for Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria is scheduled to take place at the Anbariya M/A School in Tamale at 10:00 a.m. The funeral prayer will be followed by his burial at the Nyanshegu Public Cemetery.
Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria’s Education and Islamic Career
Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria was a respected Islamic scholar in Ghana who pursued higher Islamic education at the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia.
He travelled to Madinah in the 1970s on scholarship and later graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Islamic Law and a Master’s degree in Islamic Theology.
After completing his studies, he returned to the institution to teach, further establishing his reputation as an Islamic scholar and educator.
From 1997 to May 2007, Sheikh Saeed Abubakar Zakaria served as an Imam in Canada before returning to Ghana.
He subsequently took leadership of the Anbariya Islamic Institute following the death of its founder, Sheikh Yussif Sualih Ajura, popularly known as Afa Ajura, who passed away in 2004.
His passing is expected to be deeply felt by the Anbariya Sunni Community, Muslims in Tamale, the Northern Region and the wider Muslim Ummah in Ghana.
