Six people have selected nomination papers to run in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election, which is set for March 3, 2026.
Among them is the widow of the late Member of Parliament, Hajia Amina Adam.
Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, the ambassador of Ghana to Nigeria, Yakubu Azindow, a former candidate, Mohammed Ramne, Mohammed Abdul Salam, and Najib Mohammed Sani are the other five male aspirants.
Theophilus Tetteh Chaie, the NDC Greater Accra Regional Secretary who provided Graphic Online with the information, stated that the party would examine the profiles of aspirants when nomination forms were submitted on January 27, 2026.
This will be followed by vetting, balloting, and appeals on January 28, 2026, with the primary scheduled for February 7, 2026.
The race to succeed the late NDC Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, has heated up since the party decided to allow nominations for prospective aspirants to run in the primary on Saturday, January 24, 2026.
Ayawaso East has been a bastion of the ruling NDC since the Fourth Republic began, reliably producing victory for the party in both presidential and parliamentary elections.
Out of 31,249 legitimate votes cast in the 2024 parliamentary elections, the late NDC MP Naser Toure received 22,139 votes, or 70.85 percent, while his only opponent, Zak Rahman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), received 9,110 votes, or 29.15 percent.
The NPP has stated that it will run in the by-election, although it has not yet stated if it will hold a primary to choose a new candidate or keep Zak Rahman, its 2024 parliamentary candidate.
The Liberal Party of Ghana has also indicated that it would like to run a candidate.
