Following a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra today, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, during a continuing military recruitment drill, at least six people have been confirmed dead.
According to reports, thousands of young Ghanaians flocked to the stadium in an attempt to join in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF). There were numerous injuries and fatalities as a result of the turmoil caused by the big throng and the fierce jostling at the entry points, according to sources.
According to Citi News sources, the 37 Military Hospital mortuary has received the bodies of the six deceased, while the facility’s casualty ward is getting emergency care for several more.
Since then, the military has blocked all major routes leading to El-Wak Stadium in order to maintain order and aid with rescue efforts, and security forces have cordoned off the area.
The Ghana Armed Forces had announced an extended recruitment period when the unfortunate occurrence took place. Due to technical issues with the recruitment platform, the exercise, which was originally set to expire on October 31, 2025, has been prolonged by one week.
The military stated in a statement signed by Acting Director General of Public Relations Colonel Evelyn Ntiamoah Asamoah that the extension was required to assist applicants who had encountered challenges during the first phase.
The statement stated, “The Ghana Armed Forces has extended the deadline for the ongoing recruitment exercise by one week due to some technical challenges encountered on the recruitment portal during the initial period.”
Although authorities have not yet made an official statement regarding the stampede, initial reports indicate that inadequate crowd management and the large turnout played a role in the catastrophe.
It is anticipated that investigations would be started to ascertain what caused the occurrence and to stop similar catastrophes from occurring during recruitment drills in the future.
