His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, received a courtesy call from Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin yesterday, Wednesday at the Manhyia Palace.

Following the death of the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, the visit was intended to convey Parliament’s sincere condolences and support with the King and the people of Asanteman.

Having been unable to attend the last burial services for the late Queen Mother, the Speaker felt compelled to personally offer His Majesty his condolences.

Hon. Andrew Asiamah Amoako, the Second Deputy Speaker; Hon. Rockson-Nelse Dafeamekpor, the Majority Chief Whip; Hon. Patricia Appeagyei, the Deputy Minority Leader; Mr. Ebenezer Ahuma Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament; and members of the Parliamentary Service joined him.

Rt. Hon. Bagbin said in his remarks that he was deeply saddened by the Asantehemaa’s death and that she was a distinguished matriarch whose leadership, dignity, and advice had made a lasting impact on Asanteman’s history and culture as well as Ghana’s overall culture.

Additionally, he reaffirmed the Parliament’s ongoing commitment to fostering peace, sound governance, and legislative reforms that advance the country’s growth.

The Speaker underlined that because of her crucial role in maintaining tradition and offering moral direction to the Palace and society at large, the death of the Asantehemaa is not only a loss to Asanteman but to the entire country.

The Speaker and the delegation were thanked by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for the visit and for Parliament’s demonstration of solidarity.

He urged members of Parliament to uphold their commitment to serving the country and praised Parliament for its commitment to strengthening Ghana’s democratic governance.

In appreciation of Parliament’s crucial role in Ghanaian democracy, the Asantehene promised to provide a handmade ornate kente fabric for the Debating Chamber as a sign of goodwill.

His Majesty’s donation of kente cloth more than 20 years ago will be replaced by this present, which is part of a larger attempt to keep Ghanaian culture alive throughout the country’s legislative procedures.

On Tuesday, October 21, Parliament will meet again to continue working to further the goals of the Ghanaian people.
