Biography
Osei, who was born in Kumasi, was exposed to musical instruments at a young age. In the seaside city of Sekondi, he started playing the saxophone while trying to form a band with his college pals.
He spent a year working as a building inspector after graduating from college before starting a band called “The Comets.”
Prior to Osei’s 1962 trip to London, the Comets experienced a brief period of fame.
Before being compelled to leave Ghana due to a regime change, he was given a grant by the government of Ghana to attend a private music and drama school for three years.
He and a few other musicians formed Osibisa in 1969. Even though they still perform today, the band’s popularity petered out in the 1970s before declining.
