The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that only candidates who ran in the 2024 Parliamentary Election in the Kpandai Constituency will be entitled to participate in the impending rerun mandated by the High Court.

Mr Fred Tetteh, the EC’s Deputy Director of Research, stated that the Commission will not issue a new notice of election and that “no fresh candidates will be added aside from the NPP, NDC, and APC candidates who contested in 2024.”

He added that, while Parliament had legally notified the Commission of a vacancy, a date for the rerun had yet to be determined.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday, Mr. Tetteh stated, “We have received the notification from Parliament, but the Commission has not settled on a date for the rerun.”

In response to a petition claiming irregularities, the Tamale High Court invalidated Mr. Matthew Nyindam’s election as a member of parliament for Kpandai in November 2025.

A new parliamentary election must be held within 30 days, the court ordered.

The EC Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, was notified of the vacancy following the court’s ruling in a letter dated December 4, 2025, by Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, the Clerk to Parliament.

In order to decide on the next course of action, Mr. Tetteh stated that the EC was examining the Court’s orders and the notice from Parliament.

“Preparations are ongoing, and once the Commission meets, an official date will be communicated,” he continued.

Given the ongoing political changes in the constituency, the EC is anticipated to release a schedule for the rerun in the next few days.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disagreed with the Court’s decision, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has applauded it.

It questioned why the entire election should be repeated rather than just the polling places that were impacted.

The current MP, Mr. Nyindam, has appealed the Tamale High Court’s decision and requested a stay of execution.

At a press conference in Accra on Tuesday, the NPP also criticized the Clerk of Parliament’s choice to inform the EC of the vacancy prior to the appeal’s outcome.

In the cancelled 2024 elections, Mr. Nyindam received 27,947 votes (53.47%) from the Kpandai Constituency, which is situated in the Kpandai District in the Northern Region.

Mr. Daniel Nsala Wakpal of the NDC, his nearest rival, received 24,213 votes (46.33 percent), while Mr. Donkor Eric Nipani of the APC received 104 votes.

The constituency contains 66,850 voters and 152 voting places, according to the 2024 election data.
